ABSTRACT: This study investigated the occurrence of antibodies for BVDV-1 in swine herds located in the region of Mossoró city of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. A sample size of 412 animals was estimated assuming unknown prevalence (set at 50%). Virus neutralization assay was used to the detect the presence of antibodies for BVDV-1 and the results found were analysed using multivariable logistic regression model. The obtained prevalence was 4% at animal level and 45% at the animal and herd level. The titers were highly variable between animals and within farms. Desde a década de 70 a suinocultura vem evoluindo significativamente, tornando-se uma moderna cadeia produtiva. Atualmente os produtores criam o suíno moderno com 55% a 60% de carne magra na carcaça e apenas de 1,0 a 1,5 centímetro de espessura de toucinho. Essa evolução faz com que mundialmente seja a carne mais consumida. No Brasil, contudo, o consumo de carne suína seguiu tendência contrária, quando comparado ao resto do mundo. Esta inversão de valores pode ser explicada por hábitos e tradições regionais e questões de saúde, essas últimas repletas de mitos e informações distorcidas, que prejudicam a imagem da carne suína in natura. ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of L-arginine supplementation in lactation diets on the productive and reproductive performance of pluriparous sows and their litters. Seventy-six sows of the same genetic line were assigned to four treatments in a completely randomized design with 19 replicates. The experimental unit was the sow and its respective litter. Treatments comprised a control diet (no L-arginine supplementation) and other three diets obtained by top dressing the control diet with 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% of L-arginine. L-arginine supplementation had no effect on any performance variables, body condition, milk production, or weaning-estrus interval. ABSTRACT: To assess the success of a segregated medicated early weaning protocol for elimination of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, ten consecutive batches of 100 pigs per batch weaned at 7-9 days of age were monitored at 21-22 weeks of age looking for presence of productive cough, presence of antibodies against the agent and pleuropneumonia-compatible lung lesions at slaughter. Also, whole tonsils were processed for A. pleuropneumoniae identification by both bacteriological isolation and nested-PCR using a direct method. Positive serological test (1.4%) and PCR (3.5%) results, suggested that A. pleuropneumoniae could not be eradicated in all batches, even using segregated medicated early weaning protocol. |
